Old one was betterReview by Sparkey

I've had the "Old" reporter for about 9 years now. Have a 1300' driveway but could never get it to work even half that distance. I have it mounted about 400' away from the house and it worked perfectly 99.9% of the time. I have been very happy with it. Had to replace the sensor about 4-5 years ago and batteries lasted well over a year. I bought a new one that had 2400' range a year or so ago and it worked all the way to the end of my drive. I sold it to a customer so don't know how reliable it would have been at that range. I did find that it wasn't very loud and didn't have the relay. I use that to trigger a buzzed in my shop because I can't see the drive. It sounds like they don't make the long range one anymore and the new one isn't as good as the old. That's very sad because my sensor is going out and was hoping to get a replacement. Guess I'm going to look at other brands (Posted on 10/3/14)

I installed this unit on a post about 10 feet from my driveway to alert me when a vehicle enters. Receiver is only 250 feet from sensor. Performance is erratic. Sometimes it fails to detect vehicles. Other times it will beep 5 or 6 times when only one vehicle enters the drive. I tried adjusting settings but could not get it to perform well. Battery life is 6 months at best. Not a reliable unit. I don't know what the other reviewers are doing wrong. I do know that the cwa2000 that I installed has worked perfectly from install on. It doesn't false alert, and has not missed a vehicle that has entered my property. I have it installed on a 400 foot drive and the base is 2 walls from that LOS distance.

I can't speak to battery life yet, as I haven't had to replace them, but I can attest that the install is a easy process, and the alert tone, although not blaring, is loud enough that my wife asked me to turn it down a notch.

In attempting to get an alert to work, I purchased two other alarms prior to this model, one advertised 400 and th other, 800 foot range, neither worked satisfactorily. I think for my application that this is the lowest price, RELIABLE, alarm that you can purchase.

Like other posters, I have an old Reporter at my business that I installed 8 years ago. I have only had to replace the batteries in my transmitter twice since I owned it, and it goes off at least 50 times a day. It never false alerts. I bought one of these Chamberlain units for the house driveway, expecting the same kind of reliability since the housing is identical. Couldn't be worse. Battery life of the transmitter is about a month at best. Only triggers about 50% of the time, and that is on a one-car-wide driveway, with the unit on a fencepost right next to the driveway. Transmitter is only about 60 feet from the receiver.
Tell me what good is having a "security" device that only works half the time? (Posted on 7/8/13)

I had the air pressure driveway bell for years and it as LOUD and instantanious. Bought this because it was electronic and no hose needed. Two out of those five of the first model didn't not last over just a few months.. I still have the very first two, that I bought.. The last two that I purchased were of the newer model numbers.. And work great... The units worked on an adverage of least five years. Even with the two that didn't last long.. I would definity again.. Note: I buy though E-Bay, at the best cost I can get.. Usually, paying no more than $40 some dollars for Sensor and Base.. (Posted on 12/15/12)

The system you had before this one was excellent. I had it on a tree next to my drive and anything that came through was picked up. This newer model not only picks up everything in the drive but everything on the hwy. Its not facing the Hwy. I would love to have your older system back. It worked well for three years. When two of my sensors went out I was told that I had to upgrade to this newer system because the older ones weren't available. (Posted on 11/11/12)

For us the product has been GREAT! We have the base and 4 sensors along our driveway to let us know at point people are coming to the house. The price was very good and it performs as advertised. I do wish that it had different tones and was capable of connecting into camera system or audio system. For the price and the sense of security this sense is awesome. (Posted on 11/7/12)

I've had the CWA2000 for less than a year. I have 4 motion sensors. I installed them on the side of our house opposite from the bedroom side for night protection. I began to be suspicious that something was wrong when I realized the kids did not set them off while playing. I took the receiver in hand and triggered each of the 4 detectors one-by-one DIRECTLY in front of them. NONE of them worked.
I have a lot of experience with electronic devices of many types. I removed and replaced the batteries in all devices. I tested, cleared memory and re-paired as per manual 3-4x. Each detector was tested with-in 1 foot of the receiver. NOTHING WORKED. Assuming that all 4 detectors would not fail, I assume that the RECEIVER FAILED.These devices are JUNK! Further, when originally installed I tested the range. One mile reception MIGHT work in a unobstructed desert but, at my home, the maximum range WAS about 60 feet subject to normal frame house construction. I have no recommendation for a better brand nor, "any dog in this fight" but, I can tell you from my experience, a dog would be a better dollar spent as opposed to CHAMBERLAIN CWA2000 JUNK. Nine years ago I purchased the "Reporter" wireless motion detector, good for 50' detection, got good performance and decided to buy another because the "reporter" did work so well. Looked and could not find the "reporter" but found the 'Chamberlain' instead, looking just like the 'Reporter' but the receiver had been remodeled. I rec'd the 'Chamberlain' two years ago and I can't get to perform no better than 15 feet. That sucks, so I had to install it in a walled walk-way.
Would I recommend this product? NO! When these new people took over the "Reporter" mfg, they tampered w/the sensitivity for the 'Chamberlain'. 091212. (Posted on 9/11/12)

chamberlain cwa2000

The specs say it is good to 120 degrees but I found it works best only straight on. It may be good outdoors given that all the pictures on the package show those scenes but I wanted it for the living room before going up the stairs. It did not work well at 15 feet accross the room at chest level with 30ft. setting - very inconsistant. I set it at floor level about 2 feet to the side of the stairs. It has a delay so that as a person walks across the beam they will have taken 4 or 5 steps to the bottom landing before the alarm goes off. The alarm unit is at the end of the hallway at the top of the stairs. Then it only beeps 2x and stops. If one is asleep 2 beeps is not enough. Also the volume adjust does not work well being 2 pushbuttons insead of a knob control. It is advertised as light and sound but the little led is always lit to indicate power on. At $50 it is a bit pricey. It may work well for a driveway or door entrance way to alert someone inside that there is someone outside and they should designate it as such. (Posted on 11/27/11)

We bought this as a security measure when things were being stolen from an estate sight. We now use it at our home, and it works flawlessly to alert us to anyone walking or driving in our driveway. We only monitor about 50' across the yard, but it works. The sun was setting it off once a day, but that was easily fixed by taping a large coffee can lid on top of unit (which matches our brick) and it's never gone off in error since. We LOVE this unit! We keep it on the second or third lowest levels as it is plenty loud to wake us in the night! HIGHLY recommended. (Posted on 3/13/11)

I replaced several of these in past, hoping that possibly I had a defective unit or two. Range is anywhere from 80-110 feet consistently. ANY distance beyond that is hit or miss at best. This unit misses easily 50% of traffic including Fed-Ex and UPS ttrucks. If you need a reliable system, do not buy this unit. The older system had better range, alert volume, and less false alarms. Very easy to get into service.. My base station is loud enough that I had to turn it down.. Only Problem is that the sender units have very little range.. I bought two of them and you really need to be on top of them before they detect motion.. I tried both switch setting and the 30 foot setting is marginal at 10 feet.. If you put them right beside your Driveway or next to your doorway they should work fine. (Posted on 12/12/10)

The PIR sensor is marginally acceptable. That is to say, if you point it at a vehicle's exhaust it can be expected to send a signal to its base station. However, the single beep alert provided by the base station is entirely inadequate. If there is any other noise going on in the house (TV, house vac, stereo, dishwasher, etc.), that single short beep will be drowned out by the other noise, unless of course you are right next to the base station. I wanted a driveway alarm that would be at least as loud as a doorbell, and one that would go on long enough so that you could not miss it when it went off. Instead, I got one weak beep and that's it. With this system, the first sound that you will most likely hear is when the intruder breaks down the door or breaks the window glass, not the CWA2000's weak single beep. If you are looking for a real driveway alarm, keep looking. This one is a waste of money. (Posted on 11/15/10)

We have teenage children and have had pranksters display their creative skill throughout our yard. Living in an upscale neighborhood it is an excellent place to have some fun decorating someone else's property. In the past year, we had been struck twice but now with the CWA 2000, we have apprehended two groups. It has other benefits such as detecting when the children have arrived home, guests arrive for dinner or the car pool has arrived in stead of peering out the window and wasting time.
