The RS-232 adaptor kit is an interface kit used between PowerMax control panel and a local Personal Computer. It is used for data downloading and uploading. The kit enables data transfer by using PowerMax Remote Programmer software.

Features

  • Enables generation of printable reports of site data.
  • The kit includes RS-232 cable and adapter, PowerMax / PowerMax+ Remote Programmer software CD, installation guide and user guide.
  • Runs on IBM compatible PC with Pentium microprocessor (100 MHz or higher).
  • Uses Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT operating system.
  • Allows offline preparation of specifications, each of which is a set of parameters especially tailored for a particular PowerMax / PowerMax+ installation site and then downloading them into the PowerMax control panel.
  • Enables the operator to upload all the parameters or a specific data table from the PowerMax / PowerMax+ control panel to the PC, then to make the necessary changes on the PC screen, and then to download the data back into the PowerMax / PowerMax+ control panel.

After I tested the RS232 kit with a wired connection I move the PowerMax+ panel to a more secure location and discovered I could not easily run cable from computer to it. One choice was to use a laptop computer for the programming connection, but that is less convenient for me and my laptop didn't have a serial port on it anyway. So I purchased a couple Bluetooth wireless serial port extenders, one for computer and one for PM+ and they work great. I can now access the hidden and secured PM+ console from my convenient desktop computer over a secured wireless connection. By secured I mean non-broadcasting, paired transceivers with PINs and, of course, access and download codes other than PM+ defaults. Very nice.

I used this to attach to 2 different alarm systems to program them quicker. I found the interface went in fairly easy however the connector included in the package doesn't fit! I had the hardware because I am a computer technician to make a connector. Once I set that up the access to the software was fairly simple as are changing the settings. Make sure you read the manual thoroughly and pay extra attention to the Upload and Download. They are opposite of how I would have expected them to be. In anycase the basic programming is easier however if you mess up it is a pain to restore the previous setup. I even set my system back to factory defaults and attempted to reload and I still no longer hear the door open warnings... though it is clearly enabled in the software and on the panel. Note the interface also requires an adapter that plugs into the system so you cannot easily use it for multiple systems. However, I have not attempted the dialup programming option which may work as detailed.

I thought I might be spending money that I didn't need to spend when I purchased the software but the the initial programming is really easy when you see it on the computer screen. In addition, the software is particularly helpful when you want to make adjustments periodically. I just pull up the program, make the changes I want and load it into the system. No manual to find and look through.
