A deadbolt is not a security system. Sure, it can help, but it easy to add something a bit more high tech, without breaking the bank. After all, you may not live inside Fort Knox, but that doesn’t mean you can’t act like it. Instead of calling in a pro, digging into Drywall and insulation, and having a programmer tweak a system beyond your comprehension; there are a variety of products out there that can start protecting your most precious belongings within minutes.

The Visonic PowerMax Plus is one of those systems that can take the guesswork out of setting up security for your home. It’s perfect for a smaller home or apartment, or someone that’s just starting out with home security. Many of those people don’t know what they need or don’t want to make a big financial commitment at the beginning. This kit is a fraction of the cost of custom systems. However, it does provide a complete security solution, as well as the option to add on more features and equipment later—again, without having to call in a pro.

Think about the most vulnerable areas of your home. This would be a great place for one of Visonic’s MCT-302 magnetic contact transmitters. Two of these are included in the starter kit. Each one can be easily placed at any door or window opening. Don’t worry about Fido interfering with the system, either. The included K9-85 MCW will take care of your four-legged friends. This sensor can distinguish between man and man’s best friend (or friends); working with the system so that pets won’t constantly trigger the alarm. Instead, if a guarded window or other area is opened, the MCT-302 will send a signal back to a two-way wireless keypad. Want to protect additional areas? Transmitters can also be purchased separately, and added to any area around your home.

The keypad is sort of the brain behind the system. This is the point where all of the action happens. When a transmitter is triggered, it sends a message to this device. Then, the system will call your cell or send an email. Of course, it’s also one of the spots where you will arm and disarm the system. However, if you don’t feel like standing, the MCT234 keyfob will allow you to be lazy and protected. This 4-button controller comes with the system, and can arm or disarm the unit from anywhere within range. It’s actually perfect for when you are fumbling to get into a dark house at night

Although the system comes pre-programmed, the keypad area is also where you would add in other products. Of course, there are plenty of those! One neat idea is to add a few cameras into the mix. This will allow you to take a peek at your property, when you are inside the home. Two PowerLink packages are also available, and can provide those shots to you anywhere there’s a web connection. It’s not just convenient for when you’re out of town, but also to see if there has been a delivery, when the kids get home from school, and any other day-to-day activities.

It was easy enough to install and it works really well. I have a friend who is a cop and he says that home alarms that call the police when the alarm is triggered are not taken seriously. If they police do come, it is often too late to catch any burglar. Hence I installed my alarm without the monitoring service. The siren is loud enough to startle a burglar. I am happy with my purchase. I feel good knowing it is there.--Ben

I researched the options, then chose this one. I felt overwhelmed when I read the instructions, thinking I was in over my capabilities, and out of frustration, just let it sit on the table for a day. The next day, I called the tech support guys, and they were FANTASTIC. They walked me through every step of the way. I am a senior female with limited skills, and the techs patiently led me from start to finish in about an hour. I called them back with questions 3 times, and never had to wait for someone to answer. I am pleased with the options on this system and impressed with the support team. Thanks for an affordable security option that even an old lady can do!

Had system installed for 2 days now, and has worked flawlessly so far in use and in testing also. GSM works great, but wish it were wirelessly attached to panel. The GSM cable attaches to side of panel rather than back, so I had to take cable through a hole in wall above unit to hide, rather than in space behind panel where it would have been more hidden and neater. This would actually be better if you do not want to go into wall to hide cable, but less stealth . Seems to me an exposed cable might allow someone (like a repair person that had opportunity to observe system in advance) to follow cable and destroy GSM before it could make an alarm call during a break in. I did not discuss this with the excellent tech support, maybe they have a fix. Setting up took some study and support calls, but I am retired and have time. Would be better if they had the option to set up complete alarm system themselves before shipping like the basic system already does for folks that are not so technically inclined. They would save customers time and trouble, and create a new revenue source. Wish they had extra info with install manual to explain programming better (like step by step in plain English like tech support does already on the phone, rather than sometimes difficult to understand flow charts), so do-it-yourselfers could understand more easily without calling. This would save us and them time. Overall I like it and plan to add more sensors, to protect an outbuilding.

So far I am impressed. Had the system for around 2 months and I am buying components a little at a time. I want to get more smoke and flood sensors. I did already have a false alarm in the basement. About blew my cat off the chair with a 32 pistol one night. The sensor in the basement is set more senstive though for I normally have no pets down their. I do agree the installation did take alot of studying for me but it is all there on how to do it and I did have good results from the tech support people on helping on some issues. I am even still learning all the many features it has. Beats paying Brinks which proposed me 800.00 to install and then 3 years of 35.00 monitoring required. Glad I went this route now. ALso it makes me more secure seeing the other night we had a breakin 3 doors from my house with gunfire.

Yes, the manuals are intimidating the first time (and maybe the second time) through, but if you work through the setup procedure on a bench, as the manuals suggest, it soon starts to make sense. Perhaps the main reason the manuals seem complicated, is because the Powermax has so many configurable features. But that's one of the things that make it a great unit: it will work in just about any situation in a home or small business. I have installed 3 of these over a period of 10 years. One in my home, one in my retirement home, and one in my son-in-laws business. They are extremely reliable. I've never had a false alarm on the one in my home in over 10 years. However, the one in my retirement home uses the GSM module, and is monitored by a service. I have had 2 or 3 alerts related to the GSM over about a 10 month period that the unit has been installed. I use the GSM unit because there is no land line at that site. The wireless sensors are easy to install. In many installations all you will need are 2 or 3 PIR sensors to protect a property. I do not use the system to protect the property when we're at home (I have other systems for that) so I only need the PIR sensors to cover the main rooms.

We have had the powermax security unit for six months. This is a good unit for the price. I did the installation myself. I do most of the handyman work around the house. If we aren't the type, hire the installer to do the install and programing. I don't pay a monthly service. The system dials several phone numbers that tell's the person that there is a possible break-in to the house. I have had no faults alarms. I have had calls made to the numbers by the unit because I did not turn unit off in time. Have someone close by your house to do a security check. If not, you may need a service. Norco has a service at a reasonable price. I did add a couple units (transmitters) to the system. I recommend a wireless siren (optional) for the unit.

The system works exactly like advertised. I even bought the gsm as primary and it calls as soon as it is set off.[t-mobile sim card worked great] like any thing else it takes time you just need to do your homework. I plan to purchase much more to add to this sytem.

This system was extremely easy to install and setup. Only problems I had with the system is that the motion sensor could be a little more sensitive and also, they need to include screws to mount the system to the wall. Regular drywall screws don't work. They get in the way of the locking mechanism. Took a little to figure that out. Oh, the sinkers that they give you to use....pieces of crap. Other than that...great system. Oh, one more thing....when using the feature to alarm the system from my phone away from home...worked the first time...can't get it to work anymore. Also, wish the door contacts were more retrofit adaptable, but that's more a knock on all door contacts not this system in particular...definitely recommend it.

At first the instructions and programming are a little intimidating, but if you read them before actually programming it makes it a lot easier. Programming the unit with the batteries in before actually installing also makes the whole experience easier. We had extra key pads for upstairs and in the garage. I was surprised how far away from the wireless control panel the key pads work. They are a little more difficult to program. The instructions are not quite as clear. It took the whole weekend to install, but we have been very happy with the system so far.

This unit has many useful features that I'm sure work great if you can figure them out. I installed this unit at my lakehome along with an extra detector and after 3 months- I still can't figure out how to get this thing working. The company who designed the unit did a great job with building it and offering great features, however, if you are a first time user, forget even trying to get this thing working without technical assistance or placing a call to someone who knows how to. Being that I have a limited cell signal at my place, it will be very difficult to even get this thing going without assistance. The directions they give you for this unit are very confusing and useless to say the least. I hope someobe at this company revises them. For now I have a $200.00 piece of abstract art hanging on my wall. I also need to purchase an overpriced GSM module to install to alert me of an alarm, if and when I get this paper weight operating. Frustrating to say the least.

I am new to the world of Alarms. It took me a bit of time to get the paradigm of the system. Once I got it it has been straight forward. Buy the system. Set it up on a table and play with it (without a monitoring contract). Play with the settings and learn the intracacies. Do this several times over a few days. It gets easier. Im 100% happy now. The system is up and running and I have signed a monitoring contract with Alarm Relay. They have been great too.

Installed my system in June 2007. Programming is a bit challenging and will take some time. Once you do program the unit, it functions very well. It's important to select the correct locations for mounting the motion sensors. Programming options allow several for several useful modes. All equipment has worked well for over one year. Tech support is excellent.

I've had the system for just over a year. I've had to replace a door sensor that stopped working for no reason and now I have to replace the pet safe motion detector because it goes off all of the time when my 9 pound cat runs in front of it. Not worth buying if you have to keep replacing it piece by piece every year...

I purchased this system along with 3 more motion sensors, 3 additional door sensors, 2 additional remote keys, and a smoke alarm. I had them all programmed, hooked up and operating within 2 - 3 hours. I used double sided tape to install all the sensors, alot easier than screws. I recommend this unit to anyone who wants a good easy to install alarm system.

The system is great, but, the programming manuals are not written very well (very ,very confusing). The best thing is your tech department. I was up and running in about twenty minutes. Maybe there should be a video showing how to program.

I am very happy with the system. All the bells and whistles you could ever want (especially for the money). Called the insurance company, they are giving me a discound on my homeowners insurance because I have this installed and working. A little hard getting is setup initially, but after reading the installer manual several times - it all clicked. Be patient - you will be glad you did.

I purchased a wireless system in May of this year. It is now July and I still am unable to install the system. I have asked several of my friends and family members to help with installing. Each person indicated that the parts and instructions were very difficult to install and understand.
