I have used the DSC Computer Interface without any issues. I have an old Dell notebook that has a serial port on so I didn't need to worry about a usb converter. If I didn't have an old notebook with a serial port I would just buy a used one on eBay. The included cord was too short for me to connect to my panel and notebook so I made me a new longer one out of some old cat5 cable I had. I do not have any problems with programing from the panel or from the DLS software and the computer. I prefer to use the DLS software, have it check for errors and then "download" to the my panel. The interface for me is easy to use and for me it is was easier to program than using the panel.

Figured I write a review about this product. It works as it should. The problem is that the progression of computer technology over the years has rendered the serial port obsolete in newer computers. Currently, the only way to connect this to those computers without serial ports is via a serial-to-usb adapter. One confirmed adapter is the Keyspan High Speed USB Serial Adapter model #USA-19HS. I have bought a generic cable using a FTDI FT232 chipset and have had it worked, but YMMV. Next thing you need to get is the DLS IV software which allows you to program your panel. You can find that information on DIY forums. After you get the software, then you have to overcome a learning curve to grasp how the software works. I found it easier to just program the panel with the RFK5500 keypad, and I use the software to just backup the programming in the event the panel dies or is reset for any reason.

Be forewarned, if your computer is like my HP DV9000, it doesn't have a serial port, everything is USB these days, you'll have to buy a 2nd adapter, a USB to serial and I have read that there's only 1 brand that will work for another thirty bucks, search the DSC forums.
