This unit has performed flawlessly for me for 2 years now. I use a pay-as-you go cellular service and refill the minutes every year.

I took the card out of my working tmobile phone and put in the unit. It did not appear to work on its own. You have to connect it to the Powermax via the included ethernet cable and then enable the GSM feature and it lights right up. You don't need to contact the carrier as long as the sim is active. The SMS messaging is incredible. It is super fast and it tells you the zone affected. Also tells you what keyfob cancelled the alarm. I recommend making the GSM primary because the unit failed to report when the analog phone line was off hook in a test of the system with GSM as backup.

The unit is simple to install. An included RJ45 connecting cable plugs into the PowerMax+ System and into the GSM Module. This cable supplies power to the GSM and delivers all signals as well, You need to purchase a prepaid simcard from Cingular or T-Mobile and insert it into the unit, that's it and your off and running. Programming the PowerMax Control System takes a little time but it is really pretty simple once you get the swing of things. You can program the GSM as a back-up to the standard phone line, as a repeater or as Primary. That is how I have used it as I have installed the system on my boat. The GSM unit will call up to 4 Central Stations, Cal 4 SMS phones to deliver text information, call 4 regular phones and deliver voice status messages, call pagers... you get the picture it will call them all. Each can be programmed to call on alarms, alerts, openings or any other mix you like. Expect to spend around $10 per month for a Pre-Paid Sim Card and an additional $10 per month if you want to send your alarms to a Central Monitoring Company to dispatch authorities. Couldn't be better. 5 Stars.

I purchased the GSM module and it works fine. I called several Cingular wireless dealers and they did not know what to do as far as selling and programming a 64K GSM SIM card for the PowerMax GSM system. I became increasingly frustrated as they would not listen to me. The dealer insisted that there were not enough digits in the serial of the PowerMax GSM dialer for it to work on their system. Finally I went to the largest dealer and told them to just put the serial number on the back of the GSM dialer as the phones serial number. They put this in and the PowerMax GSM unit worked fine as soon as it was plugged in and added in the GSM setup. I am in an area of medium to low signal strength on the Cingular Wireless Network. So far all messages have been transmitted properly. The GSM module reports to the PowerMax system if the network signal strength gets to low. The signal strength happens to be low occasionally in my area, but I am in a hole. Our local sheriffs even have trouble with their radios here. The unit seams to be working fine.
