A bulky home security system can be an eyesore. Adding to that stress is hard wire installation permanently altering the aesthetics of your room or window treatment. With its wireless connectivity and fully concealed platform, however, ION Security MICRA-D is a window security sensor that finally eliminates these pesky inconveniences.

Installing the product requires just three tools:

  1. Drill
  2. 3/4" Forstener Bit
  3. 1/4" Wood Bit (for antenna insertion

Drilling a single hole about 3" down from the inside top corner of the window mainframe, you merely place and set the MICRA antenna & transmitter (in that order) within the cored opening before covering with the system's Surface Mount Magnet, ensuring the product is concealed. That's it!

From then on your fear of any burglars spotting your motion sensors and finding alternate and less-secure entryways into your home or commercial space can be forgotten, because this 3 step easy-to-install package is not only virtually invisible to the naked eye, but it uses a sophisticated wireless transmit that extends to 500 ft of any DSC wireless receiver - making it an ideal choice for installing in just about any corner of your home or office.

The ION Security MICRA-D sensor's battery-life is another one of it's convenient features, as its 3.0V Lithium Coin Cell Battery has an average life-span of about 5+ years, ensuring you and your family's safety will not be compromised by the vexing and easily forgettable task of constantly having to replace your battery.

  • Dimensions: 0.33 in. deep x 0.75 in. diameter
  • Fully concealed for wood, vinyl or aluminum clad windows
  • Compatible with all DSC wireless receivers
  • 500 ft open air wireless transmit range
  • Long-life Battery - 5+ years (avg)

How It Works
The window sash sensor triggers an alarm whenever the contact between it and its corresponding surface mount magnet is severed.

Not enough space between door and jamReview by Al
Even with the recessed hardware, with the adhesive based magnet, there's not enough space between the recessed hardware and the magnet. Actively searching for something thinner to be used for the magnet (magnetic tape?) since recessing the magnet will be ugly since it is not round or square. (Posted on 8/31/14)

Purchased a DSC Alexor system and elected to install these rather than the surface mounts. I had some doubts about drilling into the vinyl window vertical frames and water leakage. I contacted the manufacturer of micra-d who emailed me support that I would not void the window warranty or cause any damage or water leakage issues. Great customer support and emails from them if you have any concerns.

Installed a bunch of these in my windows and sliding door and they work great. Easy to install and the alarm system recognized the code right away for quick programming. Definitely the way to go if you are looking for a concealed option which we wanted.

One minor issue I ran into after drilling the hole in vertical vinyl window framing...there is apparently "ribbing" between the inside and outside framing which for me prevented installing the micra-d. I needed to use a dremel and small grinding attachment to carefully grind away the ribbing and then the sensor fit in no problem. Just a little more work but it is a very clean install. I have a number of these sensors installed for both doors and windows and they work well. I did have an issue with these sensors when installing them in windows. My windows have a drain for rainwater to pass through. When you drill a hole to install the Micra sensor, you might be placing it along the path where the water drains. In this case, when it rains, water will flow around the sensor, seeping into the sensor electronics and making it non-functional. If the system is armed and the water causes the sensor to stop working, it will trigger a false alarm. In other words, the sensor works fine until it gets wet. To get around the problem, get "Waterproof Grease" from the Home Depot plumbing department for $3, and cover all sensor openings with the grease and also around the drilled hole and sensor lip so when the sensor is inserted it creates a watertight seal. This way, water cannot enter the sensor and hence it won't fail. Do not use silicon or any caulking as you will not be able to change the battery. I did this after I had some failed sensors due to rainwater and haven't had a problem since. If you do this, you will not have any issues with these sensors. (Posted on 4/13/11)

I purchased a dozen of the Micra-D sensors from HSS. They work seamlessly with the DSC Alexor wireless alarm system, and are easier to install than the DSC-branded sensors. Specifically, with the DSC sensor, you need to drill 2 holes - one for the sensor and the other for the magnet. With the Micra-D, you only need to drill one hole for the sensor while the magnet is glued on with a very strong adhesive tape. I did have one issue with one of the sensors where a fresh battery would drain out within a week. This was only with one sensor out of the 12 I purchased. This is where HSS came to the rescue. They honored the warranty and quickly replaced the part and everything works well. 5 stars for these Micra-D sensors and 5 stars to HSS for customer service. (Posted on 10/31/10)
