Works out of the box, what more could you ask for?

Step one: Go and buy a themostat wire (Mine ended up being 25 ft of 18-gauge standard red/black wire). Spend an hour fishing said wire through the wall, cursing multiple times.

Step 2: Discard the manual, it is terrible. No really, use it as kindling.

Step 3: Watch/google Youtube Videos about setting up your L5100PK.

Step 4: Change the master code, install all the modules in the right zones, curse multiple times as you ruin the double-sided tape, go out and buy more double-sided tape, then eventually super-glue the to steel doors. Minnesota in wintertime, it's next to impossible to mount anything to half-frozen doors.

Step 5: Accidentally set off the alarm multiple times, curse as you can't figure out which zone is throwing a fault, and above all else, refuse to call Home Security Tech Support (although you have heard awesome things about it, you're a man and you don't need no help!) and curse some more until you figure it out on your own (mine turned out to be the wrong Loop Number picked for my motion detector).

Step 6: Enjoy your secure home. I came back to buy more door/window alarms, I was worried they are too big for the half-sliding windows, but they work perfectly on the ledge. (Posted on 12/16/13)

I read the REVIEWS on this product manual and the description many times, so I am knowledgeable about the Honeywell Lynx Touch 5100 Self-Contained Wireless Alarm Kit and it will NOT turn on. I'm so FRUSTRATED cause I read all this information about how it works and it do NOT WORK. There's NO lighted screen for me NOR icons ONLY BLACKNESS as the unit will NOT TURN ON and I have fully installed the battery that came with it. I was so excited about the product now my heart and wallet is hurting. (Posted on 10/17/13)

I bought this system because my old magnum alert system could not be monitored because the dealer "code" was lost and no longer available. Anyhow, I could not be more pleased with this L5100 Lynx from Honeywell. The installation of the motion detectors was a breeze as was the door and window sensors. I was a little skeptical of buying a wireless system at first because my old system was hard wired. Believe me, wireless is the way to go. It's simple, easy and just as reliable as hardwire. The keyfob that comes with the unit is a welcome bonus enabling one to arm and disarm the system remotely. I added a separate siren to activate along with the built in siren in the control panel. The separate siren was a MPI-30 and it will require an Altronix RBSNTTL relay module. Wiring the relay panel was a challenge but with the technical help of the knowledgeable techs at The Home Security Store I got it done. These guys were extremely helpful and patient should you need ANY help with installation. My Lynx 5100 has so many features that I am currently only using the most basic ones. I still can arm my old Magnum alert system if I want to at the same time I arm my monitored L5100. If I have an intruder, they will hear two very loud MPI-30 sirens, and two screaming control panels. If you are a bit handy, like me, this system is for you. It should provide the peace of mind and security you are looking for at a fraction of the price you would pay for professional installation. I just thought I would post an update on a system after a year experience. Research a little more than a year ago led me to purchase the 5100 system, install it myself, and set up for monitoring and TC. Being a tightwad, I wanted everything dirt cheap. Found it at what was a good price back when it was fairly new to release. Install was a breeze (although, I tend to read and research a lot and tech doesn't scare me), and setting up monitoring and TC with an online provider via internet went perfectly. System has worked as advertised and has features that I will probably never exploit. Log on thru the computer TC interface, and a few months into it found the android app for TC 2.0 released and it also has worked right (turn system on/off and get messages from the smartphone). I use Wifi as primary and only seem to get an occasional dropped signal message.
Maybe not for everyone, but I can highly recommend it for placing on your research list to see if it meets your needs. (Posted on 8/17/13)

This has been one of the easiest installs I have every done! I replaced an old Ademco system that had been in the house for about 12 years. Lucky for me the behind the wall wiring for power was already in place so connecting up the new power was as simple as checking polarity. Once powered up, adding sensors was a breeze. I was amazed at how simple it was. From the time I took the old system off the wall it took a total of an hour to be up and running. This includes connecting to my wireless network! I will be adding the z-wave feature very soon. (Posted on 7/10/13)

This is a great system! Easy to install sensors, cameras, thermostat, and key fob's....and work with total connect app on your smartphone. I only encountered minor problems that were my fault...like locking myself out of programming mode and wiring z-wave devices properly. Read the directions, take your time, and Google any questions you have...our home is secure and we are sleeping a lot better! Total Connect and Z-wave automation is worth every penny! Bought this starter kit and love it. I was able to install/program myself and this is my first alarm system. Adding sensors is a breeze, just punch in serial number to the Lynx unit, name the sensor, and test it. I have a total of 15 sensors, a combination of door/window sensors, glass break sensors, and motion sensors, all of which work perfectly. I also have 3 key fobs which were even easier to link with the system, just go to the correct screen, press the arm button on the key fob twice and that was it.

I have also added 2 z wave deadbolts, 2 z wave thermostats, and 4 z wave dimmer switches. All of which I am able to control from anywhere on my phone through Total Connect 2.0. The Total Connect 2.0 phone app is great but needs some fine tuning but am confident it will get better with time. With the app I am able to disarm/arm my system, make sure my doors are locked, lock them if they are not, turn lights on and off, see events that have occured, and adjust my thermostats. It will e-mail and text me when pre-selected faults occur, for example: when a liquor or gun cabinet is opened, a specific door is opened, unit is disarmed, alarm, and etc.

The Total Connect basic package was $5 a month through my monitoring company (this $5 was on top of there monitoring fee). An additional $5 a month if you want to control your z wave devices from anywhere you have internet connection, and another $5 if you want the premium service which allows you to monitor all of your zones individually. If you do not wish to monitor specific zones you can save yourself $5 a month and stick with the basic package. If you wanted to add surveilance (camera) funtionality so you can watch your cameras from virtually anywhere, that would be another $5. It sounds like they are nickel and diming you but I have home monitoring, total connect premium, and the automation for $23.95 a month. When I decide to add surveilance, i will still be under $30. The same can't be said for GE line of alarm systems with similar features.

I am also able to make scenes with my z wave devices. For instance, I programmed the 4th button on the remote to be an "evening disarm". With my "evening disarm" button I am able to disarm the system from my car when I get home, turn on the exterior lights, turn on the foyer light, set the thermostats to my "at home" setting and unlock my front door. I can do all this with one push of a button on my key fob remote. When I arm the system in away mode it locks the doors behind me, turns off the lights that I have selected, and turns the thermostat down to my "away setting". When I arm my sytem in stay mode I just have it make sure the doors are locked. I have schedules that do certain things at certain times of the day too. Just remember that you will need to buy the z wave module ($26) for the Lynx 5100 and purchase your z wave light switches, door locks, and thermostats seperately.

I know I said this was all easy (and it is) but it is time consuming and you will spend a lot of time flipping through the pages of the manual. I had the alarm feature itself I had up and running that afternoon and evening. The rest is how crazy you want to get with the z wave automation.

Bottom line: Buy it, you won't regret it. You can't put a price on safety and all the cool z wave automation features are a bonus. (Posted on 2/10/13)

I purchased this item, it arrived when expected, performed as expected but it takes some time to read and understand the instructions. Wireless sensors and buttons were very easy to install and program. Z-wave module worked as expected. I purchased Leviton wireless switches on Amazon for my three way switch that controls my exterior spot lights. They integrated perfectly and they come on when a burglar alarm goes off. You can add on all kinds of features to fully automate and protect your home. You can even buy an outdoor wireless sensor and protect your shed as long as it's close enough to the house. I am very pleased with my Lynx Touch 5100 system. I have no wiring experience but with some guidance from a family member on hooking up to power and phone, I was able to install and program this system myself and get connected to monitoring via Alarm Relay. Like another reviewer mentioned, the WiFi module is a great add on - it gives you another monitoring option and access to Total Connect (remote arm/disarm, view system events from mobile device). Our family has been a user of the Honeywell products for years. I use these products to protect my family, friends, and clients. Not as a certified installer of their surveillance (Casino), Intrusion, and Access Control, but as a firm believer that these products are one of the best for the buck. Having a self contained alarm that has the WiFi and 4G options along with the up and coming ZWAVE, this one tops my list.

When it comes to installing this unit it's super easy. The panel is 4 screws, power, and installing the zones is also supper easy being wireless. And you don't have to be a professional to install this ! Setting it up is easy with the included instructions.

Get this panel ! It's the best. We just retired our L5000 to upgrade to the L5100. We have Total Connect 2.0 with out monitoring and we love it ! (Posted on 11/5/12)

Great system. I recommend getting the wifi communicator as it eliminates the need for hard wire. You do need to hardwire the actual control panel to power. For $10.00 at Radio shack you can do that. You really don't need to drill holes for the sensors as they do come with double side tape to install them. Alarm relay the company who provides monitoring are great and really inexpensive. $13.95 a month for monitoring and they have a great tech support team. All of this beats the "Big" alarm companies who charge $40.00 per month. Cannot beat Ademco/Honeywell quality. I am very pleased (Posted on 10/19/12)

I really like this system. It has been installed for a couple of months in my house. I've really liked the Z way functionality because it turns lights on and off for me at programmed times and also turns on all my lights when the alarm is triggered. It’s my opinion that security lighting is just as if not more important than having the alarm functions, this is why I purchased this system over others. I've also setup my Z-wave lighting to turn on when I first get home. I feel a lot better walking into my home well lite. I found it easy to program and install however I have a lot of experience with electronics and computers. However I think that most will find it doable for DIY to program if they spend a little time reading the manual. My biggest, well my only that I can think of, complaint is that this unit only supports 20 rules and schedules. For me this was limiting with my lighting. For instance when I open my back door a light is turned on, that is one rule, when I press a button on my key fob lights turn on, that is another rule, etc. I've used all my rules up with lighting and don't have enough for adding temperature controls. I had wanted to add the thermostat so that when I arm and disarm the temperature changes to save energy. I read that if you sign up for Honeywell's service you can get 20 more rules you can access online but I'm not sure about that. This is the only reason I have given it 4 stars instead of 5. Most might be ok with 20 rules but I think it is kind of limiting. The power supply is a little big I would have liked options to make the power look a little sleeker. I found the range to be good, I have a detached garage with bricks walls and both my z-wave and sensors work perfectly. As far as this being a true home automation unit it falls short in my opinion because of the 20 rules limitation and some other corks I have found. However for an alarm system it works great. Bought this to use at a new house that wasn't prewired for alarm. In the previous house I had installed a Vista 20P with zone expansion modules which was a huge headache to wire and program.

Once mounted to the wall and connecting the battery (goes inside the panel) and DC transformer (used 18ga solid fire cable with separate a 14ga ground wire), it booted right up. Went into Tools, entered the installer code (4112), Program, Zones, added the serial numbers of the contacts and it was recognized and triggered the fault correct.

Programming took about an hour although I'll go back to tweak settings after reading the manual.

PROS
* Touch response is very fast. Much better than the 6270 keypad
* Icons are intuitive. Zone faults are displayed with a picture (e.g., open window) + zone description
* Initial setup is a snap with the color screen
* AlarmNet not required (using Alarm Relay)
* Spoken zone names (limited vocabulary) is actually helpful. Know what zone is triggered even when not in front of the panel
* Keyfob buttons can be customized (e.g., disabling disarm button in case it is stolen)

CONS
* Z-Wave requires an add-on module (not in the kit), but it's cheap.
* GSM requires a very expensive add-on module.
* No support for fire/smoke on the 1 hardwired zone
* Kit comes with 4-hour battery. 24-hour battery purchased separately.
* No option for a 2nd color/full featured panel (as far as I know).

I did purchase the Z-Wave module and got it linked to a wall lamp (with a GE 45604 module). I got the light to turn on/off, but I'm hoping it can automatically turn it on if the alarm is triggered. Home automation is going to require reading the manual. (Posted on 8/7/12)
