Details

The WPA-3000 is an extremely reliable driveway alarm that is used to detect vehicles only. The transmitter operates on ONE 9-volt battery and has 50' of direct burial wire connecting the probe to the exterior case. The probe is buried parallel to the driveway, and will detect vehicles passing by within approximately 10-12 feet. The direct burial cable can be run to a tree or post nearby, where the transmitter box is located. When a vehicle drives by, the transmitter will send a signal to the WR-3000 receiver up to 600 feet away. The WPA-3000 is ideal in locations where there may be deer or other large animals that would cause false signals with a motion detecting system. Also, because the probe is buried underground, it will be the least noticeable of our wireless systems. The transmitter is weatherproof and meant for exterior locations. Up to FOUR zones can be monitored with additional transmitters. The transmitters can be programmed so they will each sound a different tone at the receiver.

The WPA-300 includes the WR-3000 receiver and WPT-3000 transmitter.

Receiver

The WR-3000 receiver can be used with any of the Dakota Alert 3000 series transmitters (WMT-3000, WPT-3000, WHT-3000). The WR-3000 plugs in to a standard wall outlet and can be placed on a table or mounted on the wall. When the receiver gets a signal from the transmitter one of 4 different tones (Classical , Westminster Chime, Ding Dong, Whistle) will sound for a few seconds. There is also a volume control so you can set the sound to the desired level. The receiver is also equipped with 4 form "C" relays (one for each zone) and one 12 VDC output terminal that will activate for several seconds when a signal is received. The receiver can be user programmed so the 12VDC terminal and one relay will activate for 10 minutes if this is desired. The tones will still sound for several seconds.

Transmitter

The WPT-3000 transmitter is used with the Dakota Alert WR-3000 receiver. The WPT-3000 transmitter uses a magnetic probe and 50 feet of direct burial cable to detect vehicles at the monitored location. When the transmitter detects a vehicle it will send a signal to the receiver which will sound one of 4 different tones (Classical , Westminster Chime, Ding Dong, Whistle) for a few seconds. The transmitter can be used to monitor driveways, drive-up windows, etc.

I have a friend with two of these and he loves them. Based on that, and the listed range, I bought one of these. It does not work. I've verified switches, power, tried several locations (including a ridiculous 130' direct-line-of-site test) and it simply does not transmit. Called Dakota Alert support and Buford advises me to remove the cable from the terminals on the circuit board so I can test for current. Uh, no. It's a warranted item and I'm not going to void that warranty by tearing it apart, thanks. Besides, that's THEIR job to do the QC before shipping it for sale! So, two days old, I had to ship it back to DA. Not sure exactly what that does as far as being able to return it here, but suffice to be said I'm one unhappy customer. (Posted on 7/31/13)

I have had one of the original units for about 6 years. The copper wire connectors had to be removed, cleaned and re-tightened about every 3 months. Also, the electronic board for some reason became loose and had to be propped with a twig in order for it to work. After a while, this just became routine maintenance for me and was no big problem. My driveway is 1200 feet long. The original unit would transmit 1000 feet with no problem. I ordered a second unit to replace the original a few months ago. To my surprise, the new unit would not transmit over about 200 feet. I left the original unit in place and tweak it when necessary. I placed the new unit about 200 feet from the house. It works perfectly at that distance. Don't look for it to go beyond that. I have no idea what Dakota Alert did to shorten the range but it has to be regarded as a dumb move on their part. I do highly recommend the unit. Just don't expect it to have much range. Read the specs. (Posted on 1/27/13)

I have had the WPA-3000 installed for over 6 years and have had no problems at all. The transmitter is about 300 feet from the house. I change the battery every 3 months but I know they last longer then that. Great product for us here out in the country. (Posted on 1/7/13)

This driveway alert works perfectly every time. I have not yet buried the sensor under the driveway because of the frozen ground. I have it lying parallel to the side of the driveway tucked behind a shrub. Even with the sensitivity turned way down, the sensor has picked up every vehicle. The transmitter unit is constructed very well. I has heavy rubber seal around the door that prevents any water from entering the compartment. Cheaper units I had considered were known to have water leak into them. This unit cost more then I wanted to pay at first, but I am not disappointed. I expect many years of reliable operation.

I have been using this system for about four years without a problem. I would not want to be without it!!! False alarms will occur if there is strong lightning in the immediate area. Other than that if this device sounds a car, truck, ATV, or lawn mower is coming up your drive.

We rely on our Dakota alarm so much that I have a replacement transmitter and probe on the shelf just in case the one I am now using decides to take retirement.

This is the best thing since sliced bread. Installation was easy, but you must follow to the letter. I think problems others have seen are from tipping the probe the wrong way, so water runs into the underground probe. Water filters through ground, will obviously settle in the probe if not tipped correctly. I live in ND, we spend WEEKS at a time below zero, and only replace batteries every 8-10 months. Never misses a vehicle, even a bicycle, or even when I have my laptop in my shoulder bag and go get the mail. No false alarms. Best thing since sliced bread, I mean it. Highly recommend. We've had this system for a year and a half, had a few problems in the beginning, but Customer Service was great and turned out I had the settings wrong. Since then no problem, we have a 900 ft. driveway and I like to know when someone unexpected is coming up the driveway. Alarm will give false alerts when the battery is getting low. I've had the WPA-3000 for 4 years and it is very reliable. About once or twice a year it starts beeping to let you know the battery is getting low. I think a few times it has tripped from passing cars, but it is very rare. Once it has not gone off even though someone drover over it. The vast majority of the time it works wonderfully. My Aunt bought one a few years ago and she loves it. I'm writing this review because a coworker inquired about it and I'm sending him a link to it. I even rigged up a parallel port cable to the external outputs and wrote some software so I can set it up to monitor the house when I go away for the weekend. If someone drives over the alarm it will send a text message to my cell phone. My house is 400-450ft from the road. I tried a different cheaper model from Lowes but returned it as it did not have the range. This is just what you need.

Don't buy this. It worked for about 6 months, and I loved it. Then the problems with false signals began. I reduced the sensitivity as instructed by Tech Support, it would work for a couple of days, then the same false signals. I played around for a couple of months, reducing the sensistivity a small amount each time, but the problem was never resolved. If it worked for 6 months on a certain sensitivity, why should that sensitivity later be a problem? But anyway, I sent my old unit in and they replaced it with a new one. Again, it worked for about 6 months and the same problems. What a waste of money. (Posted on 12/25/10)

I have had this system in place for three years with no issues. Transmitter is 300 feet from the house, and it reliably announces visitors coming. Picks up the occasional bicycle, and also told me when my son was raking leaves with a metal rake over the sensor the other day. We have a lot of deer and other animals, and it's great it doesn't go off when they go by.
I haven't had a battery issue - it lets you know when the transmitter battery is low and it seems like less than once a year it needs a new 9 volt battery.
My neighbor bought the same system, and he loves it too!

The Dakota Alert WPA-3000 worked fine for a few months. Now it works occasionally. It gives false alarms, and does not pick up all vehicles. It picked up a small Suburu coming up my driveway, and a few hours latter did not detect a UPS Van when it entered, and again when it left. The unit is installed in the driveway 1000' from my house. The sending unit goes through a lot of batteries, especially in winter. A low battery warning device would be nice. I bought this unit because I wanted a dependable driveway alarm. I would have been better off buying a cheap one. At least I wouldn't be out as much money when it don't work. :) (Posted on 8/1/10)

Works great until it doesn't.

Loved it when we first got and installed it but 6 months later it stopped working.

We have switched buttons and turned knobs as instructed by customer service and the only way we have gotten it to work is to set the receiver in the window.

Not confidant it will work from there for long.

Very strange and unfortunate event because I just felt safer here with it working properly.

6 months service for $200 is not a great return. (Posted on 1/25/10)

This driveway alarm is great. We live pretty far back on our property and the entrance cannot be seen in the dark. I feel safe in knowing that any one coming up the driveway will be announced. The only flaw I see is, they advertise that it will not detect animals. This is not the case. We have an animal sanctuary directly behind out property and we have numerous deer in our driveway at all hours of the night and it DOES set the alarm off each time the animals pass. Most nights we have to either turn it down so we don't hear it, or turn it off. Kinda defeats the purpose, but I do feel safer knowing it is there. (Posted on 1/6/10)

Bought a wpa3000, an extra receiver and two of the $20 clear strobes. Retired and live 10 miles from town, at the end of the road where the gate and Private Property - Do Not Enter signs are 3/10 by road and 2/10 by line of sight. Two houses here, Son lives in the other one a little closer to the gate. Clear signal at all distances we tried and need. First night it was installed it caught a car that claimed to be lost (a typical excuse for ignoring the signs). I had the Qbeam on the car before it had come 100 yards. Good early warning (wanted or unwanted guest). Only noticed improvement needed.... A cutout circuit to provide a window in time for my son to go to work at 0400am and not set it off. Other than that, I really like the setup. (Posted on 6/24/06)
