99 Percent of the time, an intruder has to pass through your driveway to get on to your property. If you want an instant alert of that moment, the Dakota Alert Long Range Driveway Alarm Kit is right for you.

Long range means you can monitor driveway activity remotely, with alert signals sent from the transmitter to the receiver up to 2 miles away! The alert transmitter is capable of sending 4 different alert messages to the receiver so separate zones can be monitored simultaneously. This driveway alarm monitors in real time, so you'll never miss a moment of action.

This kit includes both the MURS Alert Transmitter and the M538-BS Base Station/Receiver. Combined, they take your level of home security to new heights.

MURS Alert Transmitter

This articulately crafted transmitter contains a Passive Infrared (PIR) detector that will detect people, vehicles and/or large animals trespassing on your property. The PIR sensor detects movement and motion from these objects and others like them from up to 80 feet away. When they pass in front of the transmitter box, you'll know right away. The MURS transmitter will immediately send a signal to the M538-BS base station/receiver.

M538-BS Base Station/Receiver

It operates as a transceiver which means it will both receive and transmit messages from other MURS radio units (Sold separately). This reliable receiver is equipped to operate on 5 channels with 38 sub channels. For communication with another MURS radio the channel and sub channel must be set alike. Acting as a receiver and alert system, the M538-BS has 4 different call tones that will alert you when a burglar intrudes unexpectedly.

Great Partner in Home SecurityReview by Andy

Could not live without our Dakota alert devices. We have had 5 on our property for more than 2 years with 2 severe winters packed full of snow with great success in alerting us of vehicles, deer and turkey, and people, like the UPS person, walking up our 600' driveway that drops, curves left, and curves right before going up hill through the trees. We just recently had one device that has failed to operate, so we ordered 2 more. Overall, we are extremely happy. These alerts go off about a dozen times a day. 1 unit is over 600' away and down 30' in elevation through trees and has worked flawlessly. Batteries need changed about every 4 - 6 months, and I highly recommend using an acrylic conformal coating spray for wet and damp climates. (Posted on 9/1/14)

Had it for about a year. Worked Great. Then it started making funny noises and not working very well. Needed new batteries every 3-4 months. Then worked every now and then and finally quit working. For the money, it should work longer than this. Still looking for a reliable alert system. Hope it is with the Dakota System. May give it another try. (Posted on 8/7/13)

All works flawlessly, setting frequencies or Zone numbers, the handheld serves perfectly when at the pool, garden shed, or in the basement, transmitter batteries outdoor last easily 6 months here in northern NY. Never surprised by visitors at the door, always notified a vehicle, someone walking including deer have entered the property. Great System! (Posted on 5/7/13)

When I received the kit I was initially bummed, it was missing the transmitter antenna. However customer svc. Quickly remedied the issue, after I installed the unit I was very pleased. It was installed in a barn aprox. 1500(+) ft. Away from home. "Thats not the impressive part" the barn is about 30' below grade from the house.. in other words the house was down in a large valley. You cant see the house from the barn, plus there is about a 20' area of thick trees between the 2. I installed and without fail it worked!!! Clear as a bell. Different grades, transmitting through metal at the barn. And 2 walls on house 1500'(+) away through trees!!! Doesnt get better than that!!! (Posted on 4/17/13)

Installed the unit as a first line indicator of activity along our 1000' foot driveway. I mounted it as instructed and on the back side of a tree so that it is not visible to would be trespassers ascending up the drive. It is mounted ~ 30 degrees across the driveway and detects perfectly. This allows for a slightly wider path of detection in the event a car is traveling a bit faster than normal. The transmitter is mounted ~ 800' from the base station and works as advertised. I think that the best protection and minimal false alarms would be obtained through having 2 transmitters installed. This would then show a "progression" up the driveway as indicated through, "Alert Zone 1", followed by, "Alert Zone 2" Excellent product for a first line of home protection! (Posted on 2/15/13)

We bought this because we live out in the country and our driveway is 1900 feet long and back in the woods. We set this up on the side of our barn toward the front of our property (we also bought the birdhouse to conceal it and painted it black to match our barn). We screwed the system and birdhouse to the barn and turned on the receiver in our home. It was easy and it works great! I can now have prior warning when someone is coming to our house. It transmits through the trees and into our log home. (Posted on 12/31/12)

I have a home on about 4 acres and you cannot see the entrance of the driveway from the house. We had a lot of problems with "looky-lou's" when we first moved in... and because we have a lot of windows, it meant we may look up and see a car in front of the house. With this alarm, we hear everyone coming into our driveway. The system does activate from birds or other animals, so sometimes you do get a false alarm.. But overall, it's very reliable- we love it! Just keep plenty of fresh batteries... I'm now about to buy one for my Mom! (Posted on 12/7/12)

I have 80 acres adjacent to a national forest. My gate is approximately 1/4 mile from my house. My driveway winds through heavily wooded areas and around a small lake to my house. I have needed a long range driveway alert system that would transmit through heavy forest. I have been extremely pleased with the performance of this system. I have had very few "false alarms". I suspect that they were deer or coyotes. I purchased the "bird house" to hide the transmitter and it really looks like it is a bird house (except, if you look really close, you will see an antenna coming out the roof. I was going to wrap the antenna with camo tape, but it was not really necessary since from about 20 ft away, you can't really see it. I also purchased a hand-held receiver for when I am working outside or walking in the woods. I can also use it to communicate with the base station. Good value! The only improvement I would make to the design would be to transmit sound and maybe a picture, but that would make it much more expensive, stretch the technology, and use up batteries too quickly. I am happy with what I have.

I bought this for my summer camp in the mountains of Washington State. I have a long driveway and wanted to know if anyone comes up to the house.
I placed the transmitter 240' from the base unit and the signal has to go through 70' of standing woods. Systems works great. I took some advice from the "OctagonRidge" review on Amazon. It was very helpful setting up the unit. I also bought the birdhouse. I will review that also but it did not interfere with the signal at all and does protect the alert transmitter.
The only thing I will add to the OctagonRidge review is:

l. I placed the unit 20' from the center of my gravel drivway and set the range to 30'.
2. I set the unit 3' above the ground and I was lucky to have a 5' dirt bank across from the transmitter. I placed the unit so the beam crossed diagonally across the driveway.
3. I found I could not see the LED light during the day so I just shut it off.
4. There are 2 blue and white toggle switches inside the PIR cover labeled #1 and #2. These have to be in the up position.
5. I had to set a subchannel on the transmitter and transceiver. We are in a very remote area but we have a national park about 3 miles away and were hearing voice and static bleed over from possible other same type units. We think we have a discreet signal now.

Shipping and service from Home Security Store has been great. I will be ordering a hand held from them soon, (Posted on 6/12/12)

To the person in cemetery having problems with batteries not lasting:
I had the same problem. It's a high-power unit putting out over a watt of power so it will drain small AA batteries especially in cold. That is the sacrifice for the fantastic range. I hooked up a 12 volt lawn tractor battery to mine and it has been working great for over a year so far. You will get 5-6 months off it before you have to give it a charge. It will set you back about $20 at most stores but will pay for your AA batteries in no time. Also not having the hassle of going out and changing them every month. Make sure your unit works good on the AA batteries before you modify it. Once you modify it, no more warranty. Going from 9-12 volts will not hurt it at all, but only enhance it. You need to observe the wiring in the battery pack and hook a wire from battery to the positive (Red) wire and negative (black) wire correctly. Doing it the wrong way will ruin your transmitter unit. Then you want to drill a small hole on the bottom of the case just big enough for your wire to go inside. Use any kind of quality sealant to seal hole around wire when you are finished connecting it.
It works great for me. (Posted on 6/5/12)

From order to shipment great service from Home Security Store, though the driveway is only a couple of hundred feet long the front yards only access due to a deep ditch the family and I are pleasantly notified when a anyone or anything comes up the driveway. No more surprises at the front door. If I could make any suggestions to change they would simply be a black antenna replacing the chrome for the outdoor unit, ability to change notification "Alert Zone#" does get a little annoying. Otherwise a great product. (Posted on 3/14/12)

My driveway is about 1200 feet long. I tried the other driveway alert systems and I could not find one that would work the distance reliably. I purchased the Dakota Alert BS-Kit and I was disappointed at first. I mounted the detection unit where I thought was a good spot near the driveway maybe about 10 feet away. It would only work about 50% of the time. I tried different batteries, channels etc. with no luck. Then I moved the unit to where the instructions suggested, 20 feet and perpindicular the the drive way. I measured the 20 feet to the center of the driveway. Now the system works 100% of the time and I am very happy. I also hooked up a Honeywell Wireless doorbell to the contact oulet on the base and we placed the chime unit on our deck. Finally we can get out of our hot tub without our swimsuits and in the house before someone gets to the end of our driveway. (Posted on 2/19/12)

We recently purchased this product and added 2 of the handheld radios to go with it. The 4 pieces all work great together. The sensor and main base are over 2,000 feet apart through thick planted pines and the base is in the back of our house, furtherest from the sensor. The handheld radios work great up to 2 miles and also in our poultry houses. I am about to order another sensor to use at our home. Also when you call this company you get very prompt, courteous, and professional service with same day shipping. Highly recomend this product and this company. (Posted on 11/17/11)

My Murs driveway alert is working fantastic. I couldn't ask for a better system. There is nothing on the market with that kind of range for that price. To the person that is having a problem with the range, that unit comes with a BNC Antenna Connection which means you can very easily put a coaxial cable on the existing antenna or get a good quality antenna and put it up higher. I am sure that would easily get you out 2,000 feet or more. I found it needs to be mounted slightly high like between 4.5 to 5 feet to have good detection range. Many people think they give off false alerts, but they will detect small animals. I like to know if a deer or critter is coming up my driveway and my cats do, too :) Everytime the alert goes off, my cats are up on the window. If you really want to get the most from your driveway alert, mount a good quality game camera with a fast trigger speed next to it. You will be amazed by all the critters that come lurking by. While the unit was easy to set up, I was very disappointed in the range of the transmitter. I set up the transmitter about 2000' from my home, through some dense trees, and had no reception at all. I had to move the transmitter to within 600' with line-of-sight to the home for it to work. I also had problems with false alarms from blowing tree branches (probably not the units fault, just my environment).
I ended up purchasing the MURS vehicle detector (detects metal, not motion) and am happy with the installation other than limited range. (Posted on 10/14/11)

As far as the rating thing, I give Home Security Store a 5 and The Dakota BS-Kit a 5. It came within a few days, it was definitely brand new, they had a email and tracking notification which is very nice. Their price is very reasonable and no problems with payment. So they get a perfect 5.

As far as the unit goes, you can't ask for anything better on the market. I previously owned a cheaper type alert from "The Shack". That unit was hard-pressed to make it 100 feet. It was a total piece of junk. You had to constantly fiddle with the antenna and hope the cat wouldn't bump it on the window. Yes, It had to be directly on the window ledge for any chance of making it 100 ft.
On this unit, I can place the transmitter at the very edge of my 400 foot driveway to give me plenty of warning. The receiver I can put anywhere in my house and the signal is crystal clear. The Alert is plenty loud enough for me. However I programmed the frequency into my police scanner so I can put the base unit into a different part of the house. That is a real nice thing!
The only very small negative I can think of, is it seemed to be going through batteries. I wasn't making it 2 months and with cold winter weather coming up, that would be less. I don't want to be changing batteries all the time in the cold & snow so I made a modification. I know enough about electronics to be dangerous and love to experiment :) I got a 12 volt lawntractor battery for $25. Then proceeded to drill a small hole through the botttom case and hooked the wires up correctly. Of course you will void your warranty and if you don't hook the wires up right, you will fry your transmitter. So make sure you know what you are doing or get someone that does. Anyhow, I figure the $25 battery investment will pay for itself within a year and save me the hassle of changing many batteries in the cold. So far it has worked great for me, but do so at your own risk and make sure it is in good working order with the regular batteries first. (Posted on 10/11/11)
