Temperature Sensors

Temperature sensors can be designed to work with temperature alert devices, home alarm systems, auto dialers, environmental control units, and other emergency-related devices. These devices can be set-up to simply trigger an alarm or to call, text, e-mail, or page you when the temperature hits a threatening degree.

Temperature sensors are classified into two groups. There are contact and non-contact temperature sensors. Contact sensors simply measure their own temperature, while non-contact sensors are a bit more complex. Most non-contact sensors are for commercial or scientific use and measure thermal radiant power of infrared or optical radiation that they receive from an outside source.

When selecting a sensor you should know the temperature range that the sensor can measure and know if you can custom select a trigger temperature or if it comes pre-set. You should also know if the sensor is for indoor or outdoor use. Some sensors are designed for rugged conditions, while others are not.

Keep in mind that most sensors are very easy to install, so making this a do-it-yourself project will not be complex. Just remember (if the sensor is wireless) to buy the required batteries and get an idea of how long the batteries should last. Therefore, there should be no problem ensuring power of the sensor and sending a signal to the given emergency device if needed.

Some temperature sensors can also measure humidity as well. Remember, temperature sensors can detect fluctuating or threatening conditions for your home, office, greenhouse, wine cellar, storage place, and more. This could help save your plants, pets, electronics, or possibly save someone’s life.
