Water and Flood Sensors

Water and flood sensors are designed to detect water and will trigger an alarm if detection is made. The sensors can be stand-alone or can work (depending on model and design) with a phone dialer, a home alarm, or with an environmental control system. In addition, water and flood sensors can also be integrated with a valve control unit that shuts off a given water line when prompted.

Although some of the less expensive water and flood sensors will simply sound an alarm and not actually stop the leak, the sensors will give an early warning sign that a leak needs urgent attention. This gives you some time to move valuable furniture and belongings out of the way.

You should install your water and flood sensors in leak prone areas such as behind the washing machine, dishwasher, water heater, and underneath sinks. Doing so can prevent, or at least limit, the damage that is often the result of unseen and normally undetected leaks, drips, and appliance failure. In some cases, sensors are specifically made for a specific appliance, for example – for an ice maker or for a washing machine (which is the number one cause of water damage in American households).

Also, you will want to make sure that the water and flood sensors you buy will not trigger an alarm due to condensation or high humidity.

Because flooding events can often go undetected for hours causing extensive damage to your home and personal belongings, getting an early warning of a water leak can mean all the difference.
