Outdoor Motion Detectors
Outdoor motion detectors are designed to protect the parameter of your home or business and most work off passive infrared (PIR) technology. The outdoor detectors will be more expensive that your standard indoor motion detector and while some devices work to activate an alarm control panel upon detecting the movement of an intruder, others are designed specifically for external CCTV detection applications. In addition, the detectors can be wired or wireless.
When buying any outdoor motion detector it should of course be weather-proof. However, some are built for more rugged conditions than others and have a better, more durable housing and lens. The detectors should also have features to safeguard against false alarms caused by sunlight as well. When making your selection you should also consider if the device is easy to install and maintain and if it is energy efficient, only operating when movement is detected.
Some outdoor motion detectors have more of a detection pattern than others. Be sure to ask or find out about the range of the detector. There are some detectors designed to fit specifically with a given home alarm or surveillance system, but then there are some that can easily be added on to any wireless system, effective with any manufactures' transmitter and receiver.
Before purchasing an outdoor motion detector or detectors, you should first figure out how many you need and where you would like to install them. This can be done by looking over your entire property. Other than the front and back door, you should survey the spots that you think an intruder might try and make entry.
