Facing harsh criticism in recent months for lacking adequate privacy security, Facebook has announced a new security feature that can prevent strangers from hacking into your system.

The feature, announced Thursday, lets users identify certain “approved” computers and cell phones that will be allowed to access their profile accounts.  If a computer or cellphone that has not been approved attempts to log in, the user will be notified via email or text, allowing them to prevent any potential attacks.  Users wanting to access their accounts from unapproved computers and cellphones may have to answer a security question.

The feature must be activated before being used, and users can do so by clicking the “Account” button within their account and going to Account Settings>Account Security>Change.

The site asks “Would you like to receive notifications for logins from new devices?” If you would like to receive such updates, then click the button by “yes.”
